JEBEL SHAMS BALCONY TREK
Trip Overview
Duration
Single Day Trip
Starting Point
Muscat
Experience Level
Moderate
Budget-Friendly
$123 - $273
Your adventure begins with a 6:00–7:00 AM pick-up from your Muscat hotel, where you’ll hop into a 4×4 and head toward the mighty Al Hajar Mountains. The drive itself is a scenic climb, winding through rocky villages and deep valleys, as the air gets crisper and the views more dramatic.
By 9:00–10:00 AM, you’ll arrive at Jebel Shams, where your guided trek along the famous Balcony Walk begins. This trail hugs the edge of the jaw-dropping Wadi Ghul, also known as the Grand Canyon of Arabia, offering dizzying cliffside views and stunning panoramas at every turn.
As you walk the narrow mountain path, you’ll reach the hauntingly beautiful abandoned village of Sab Bani Khamis, carved into the canyon wall. Its stone homes and terraced fields tell stories of a simpler, ancient life. For the more adventurous, your guide can lead you further to a hidden lake — a serene and secluded pool tucked into the rugged folds of the mountain.
Pause along the trail for a packed lunch, enjoying your meal with some of the most dramatic natural scenery Oman has to offer. Then, retrace your steps along the canyon rim and take in the views one last time before returning to your vehicle.
As the sun begins to set behind the mountains, you’ll head back to Muscat, arriving by 7:00–8:00 PM, tired but exhilarated, with your camera full and your soul recharged.
Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just someone seeking a soulful escape into nature, Jebel Shams delivers a powerful mix of adrenaline, beauty, and Omani heritage.
